What is the dosage and how should it be used?

Hydroxyzine comes in capsules, tablets, a syrup, and suspension that is to be taken orally.

Take hydroxyzine exactly as directed by your doctor, and never take more or less of it, or take it more often, than what has been prescribed to you.

It is usually taken three or four times a day.

Hydroxyzine has its maximal effect about 30 to 60 minutes after it is taken.

Shake the suspension (Vistaril®) well before each use to mix the medication evenly.

Patients over the age of 60 years are especially sensitive to the sedating effects of hydroxyzine, and the dose should be reduced.

Do not give this medication to children less than 12 years of age unless a doctor directs you to do so.
